Where to Put a QR Code So People Actually Scan It
Placement, context, and a clear reason to scan matter more than the design of the code itself.
The most beautifully designed QR code fails if it is on a bus that is moving. Most scanning problems are placement problems.
Put it where people are standing still
Scanning takes a few seconds of stillness and two hands. That rules out motorway billboards, the side of a moving vehicle, and a screen that changes every eight seconds.
It rules in the places people are already waiting: platforms, lifts, queues, waiting rooms, the inside of toilet doors, seat-backs, and product packaging held in the hand. Dwell time is the single best predictor of scan rate.
Reachable height, sensible angle
Between waist and eye level for anything at arm's length. A code at floor level or above a doorframe forces an awkward posture and gets skipped. On a shelf, remember it will be viewed from an angle; size up to compensate, since angle costs you effective resolution.
Check the signal
A code in a basement bar, a lift, or the middle of a large venue may scan perfectly and then land on a page that never loads. Test on mobile data with Wi-Fi disabled, standing where the scanner will stand. If signal is unreliable, prefer a static code carrying its payload directly: Wi-Fi credentials or a contact card work with no connection at all.
Give a reason, not an instruction
"Scan me" is not a reason. State what the person gets:
- "Scan for tonight's menu"
- "Scan to join our Wi-Fi"
- "Scan for the assembly video"
- "Scan to see this room's floor plan"
Specific beats clever. The value has to be legible in the second before someone decides whether to lift their phone, and it should be something better delivered on a screen than on the surface the code is printed on: a video, a form, a live timetable. If the information fits on the poster, print it on the poster.
Land somewhere that deserves the scan
Send people to the exact thing, not your homepage. Someone standing in front of a product wants that product's page. The destination must be mobile-first, load fast, and not open with a cookie wall and a newsletter popup stacked on top of each other. That combination converts a scan into a bounce more reliably than anything else on this list.
Then measure and move it
Use a separate tracked code per location so you can compare. Placement is the variable with the widest performance range: the same code, same destination, same week, will do ten times the volume in one spot versus another. You cannot predict which; you can measure it and move the poster.
Favour places where people are already standing still: queues, lifts, waiting rooms, packaging held in the hand. Dwell time is the single best predictor of whether a code gets scanned.
