Fewer fields scan better
A vCard is the densest thing on this site. Every field you add is more text inside the same square, and the pattern gets finer to fit it. On a business card, where the code might be 20mm across, the difference between five fields and fifteen is the difference between a code that scans from a comfortable distance and one that needs three attempts under a desk lamp.
Name, company, one phone number, one email and one URL cover almost every exchange. If you need a full profile — several numbers, an address, a photo, a bio — encode a link to a contact page instead and let the page carry the detail. The code stays sparse and the page can be updated later.
Print it big enough to work
Because the pattern is dense, give it room. On a standard business card, keep the code at roughly 20 to 25mm square with clear white space all the way around, and never let type or a logo edge crowd the quiet zone. Raising the error correction level does not help here either: it adds redundancy by adding modules, so the code gets denser still.
Print in solid black on white if you can. Colour is fine on screen and on good stock, but a vCard code on coloured card, printed light, is the combination that comes back from the printer unreadable.

A vCard 3.0 record — the format both iOS and Android read natively into the contacts app. Version 3.0 is deliberate: it has the widest support of any vCard version.
Questions
Does a vCard QR code work without an app?
Yes. Both the iPhone Camera app and Android read vCard 3.0 directly and offer to create a contact. The recipient still taps to confirm, so nothing is written to their phone without them agreeing.
Why is my vCard code so much busier than a URL code?
Because it carries far more text. A URL might be 30 characters; a filled-in vCard is often 150 or more, and every character adds modules to the grid. Trim the fields or link to a contact page if the pattern is getting too fine for the size you are printing.
Can I update the details later?
No — the contact data is inside the printed pattern, so a new job title means a new code. If your details change often, encode a URL to a contact page you control and update the page instead.
