Phone QR Code Generator

Point the camera, and the number comes up ready to dial. Nobody transcribes eleven digits from a van door or a shop window and gets them right every time — this removes that step entirely.

Write the number the way a phone expects it

Use full international format with the country code: +44 20 7946 0000, not 020 7946 0000. A local-format number dials correctly for someone standing in the same country and fails for everyone else, which quietly loses you exactly the callers who had to look you up rather than already knowing you.

Spaces, dashes and brackets are ignored by the dialler, so format for human legibility. What does matter is that the digits and the leading + are right, because there is no error message for a wrong number — just a call to somebody else.

Best on things people stand in front of

This type earns its place where a phone call is the natural next step and typing is awkward: a tradesperson's van, an out-of-hours notice on a locked door, a For Sale board, a machine with a service line, a hospital ward's ward-clerk number. The reader is already holding the phone they will call from.

Always print the number in text next to the code. A phone code is uniquely bad at degrading — if the scan fails and there is no readable number, the person cannot call at all, whereas a failed URL code at least leaves them a domain to type.

What gets encoded

tel:+442079460000

A tel: URI, the same thing behind a tappable number on a web page. iOS and Android both show a confirmation before dialling, so a scan never places a call on its own.

Always use +country code so the number dials from abroad too.
Print the number in plain text beside the code as a fallback.
For a switchboard with extensions, link a contact page instead — extensions do not dial reliably.

Questions

Will scanning place the call immediately?

No. Both iOS and Android show the number and wait for a tap. That confirmation is built into how tel: links are handled and cannot be skipped by the code.

Can I include an extension?

You can add it, but support is inconsistent — some diallers pass the extension digits, many ignore them, and a few refuse the whole number. If callers need an extension, point a URL code at a contact page listing them.

Is this better than a vCard code for a business card?

Different jobs. A phone code gets you a call now; a vCard gets you saved in the contact list for later. On a card with room for only one, vCard usually wins, because the saved contact contains the number anyway.
