The link format, exactly
A wa.me link is https://wa.me/ followed by your number in full international format with no plus sign, spaces or leading zeros — a UK mobile becomes wa.me/447700900000, not wa.me/+44 7700 900000 or wa.me/07700900000. Get the digits wrong and the chat opens to nobody, or to a stranger who has that number in another country.
Add ?text=your%20message afterward to prefill the message box, URL-encoded the same way an email or SMS body is. The customer still has to tap send, exactly like every other prefilled-message type on this site — nothing sends itself from a scan.
Where this beats a phone or SMS code
For an audience that already lives in WhatsApp — much of Latin America, India, and Europe — this removes the international SMS costs and carrier quirks a plain SMS code can hit, and it keeps the whole conversation, including any photos or files, in one thread instead of scattering it across texts.
It is the wrong tool where WhatsApp is not the norm, or for a formal support channel that needs a ticket number and an audit trail — a phone or email code suits those better.
