The offline type
Every other QR type is a pointer: a URL to fetch, a number to dial, a network to join. Plain text is the exception — the payload is the message, so it resolves instantly and identically in a basement, on a plane, or ten years from now when the domain you would otherwise have linked has lapsed.
That makes it the natural fit for asset tags and equipment labels: a serial number, a model, an install date, a maintenance interval. Someone scans a pump in a crawlspace and gets the details without the site Wi-Fi that does not reach down there.
Keep it short, and expect a plain display
A QR code can technically hold a few thousand characters, but long text produces a pattern so fine that ordinary printing and ordinary phone cameras stop coping. Treat a couple of hundred characters as the practical ceiling for anything printed at label size, and link to a page when you need more than that.
The scan result is displayed as text, with no formatting. Line breaks survive; bold, colours and layout do not. Write it as you would a label, not as a document, and put the most important line first — some scanners show only the opening characters until the reader taps to expand.

Questions
Does a text QR code need an internet connection?
No. The text is stored in the pattern itself, so the scanner reads and displays it with no network at all. That is the main reason to choose this type over a URL.
How much text can one code hold?
The format allows a few thousand characters, but that is not the useful limit. Past roughly a couple of hundred characters the modules get too fine to survive normal printing and phone cameras, so link to a page instead of encoding an essay.
Can I include line breaks and formatting?
Line breaks are preserved. Formatting is not — there is no bold, no colour and no layout in a QR payload, and scanners display the result as plain text.
